The month aims to make more Australians aware of what it’s like to live with dementia, while also highlighting the support and services available to sufferers and their families and carers.
The theme of Dementia Awareness Month this year is You are not alone.
Kempsey Shire Library will host ‘Dementia Myths – What are the facts?’
The information session will be presented by Kaylene Parker from Alzheimer’s Australia.
It will be held on Tuesday, September 12 at 11am to 12pm, with refreshments being provided.
Marketing and Seniors’ Librarian, Mary Williams, said for anyone in the community who knows someone with dementia, the session will provide a valuable insight into the disease.
“Dementia affects thinking, behaviour and the ability to perform everyday tasks,” Mrs Williams said.
“Brain function is affected enough to interfere with the person’s normal social or working life.
“Most people living with dementia are older, but it is important to remember that not all older people get dementia.
“It is not a normal part of ageing.
“Over 70 per cent of Australians admit that they know very little about dementia and almost half of the population do not realise that it can be fatal.”
