At the magnificent memorial on the bank of the Nambucca River, Lateika Smith gave the commemorative address where she noted “we meet here today not to glorify war”.
But the upshot of the occasion was to “invigorate our national spirit and pride”, Lateika said.
She reflected that the “trial by ordeal” endured by the Diggers – some as young as 16 years of age – in the eight months after the first landing at Gallipoli, had been carried through by service personnel in every conflict since.
