James – a competition runner – says the benefits derived from just ‘having a go’ in a local Fun Run are undeniable, and are definitely enhanced by a little training. And with the cooler weather, now’s a great time to start.
“I love running because, as I work in a high-stress environment I find that running clears my mind, gives me a sense of achievement, and is even quite meditative.”
He smiles, “I also personally love the competitive element of a race and like to challenge myself frequently”.
The social element of a Fun Run can’t be underestimated either. Enter Adrian Betts, Personal Trainer and Owner of Bellingen Fitness who says: “Get a friend on board to train with you. They can help you get out the door when motivation is low. Likewise, a weekly training session at your local gym can be very supportive and uplifting.
At Bellingen Fitness we won’t yell or push harder than you can manage. We’re friendly, fun and love to train all types and fitness levels,” he explains.
He also offers the following tips:
1. Consistency is the top tip. No matter what you do, it must be consistent. You could consistently start running 5-10 mins every 2nd day. Before you know it you'll be lining up for the 3,6 or 10km run! But to train for the run you don’t actually have to do any running. Find something that you enjoy that elevates your heart rate for about 15-30mins.
2. Set small goals. Constantly achieving many small goals will eventually build into strong habits.
3. Use an app to train with. Apps are also great for motivation if you’re into tech. Strava is a good one.
4. Ensure you get good nutrition and sleep. These are the best two recovery methods as they allow the body to repair and grow, which supports your training.
Adrian and his wife Amanda have some serious cred. After winning last year’s Bellingen Show Partner Carrying Competition, they went on to win at a national level and are off to Finland in June to represent Australia in the International Wife Carrying Championships. Now that’s impressive!
Reflecting back on the Run, Adrian adds, “It’s just fun to get out and run together through some of the beautiful scenery that Bellingen is famous for.”
There’s that word again … fun. Maybe it really is, but we’ll never know if we never have a go. So will you?
