The projects are jointly funded by the Commonwealth and New South Wales governments as part of the 2015-17 National Partnership Agreement on Natural Disaster Resilience.
Mr Hartsuyker said $398,612 in funding had been committed the North Coast area to help local communities better prepare and respond to natural disasters.
“Most residents on the Mid North Coast know all too well the detrimental effects that flooding can have on the region,” Mr Hartsuyker said.
“Crippling storms are the most prevalent type of natural disaster that impact our area, so any funding that helps build capacity within our communities to deal with such events is great news.
“It’s particularly heartening to see that people with disabilities will be looked targeted in these disaster projects. In a time of crisis its these groups that are the most vulnerable and it’s appropriate that there is a project being put in place to address their needs.”
The funding will strengthen community resilience to natural disasters through the continuation of New South Wales’ existing funding programmes.
Funding will support two projects in Cowper including:
- $189,346 – emergency preparedness planning for people with disability and those with chronic health conditions and their support networks
- $202,336 – Six Steps to Resilience for Community Organisations
“This funding encourages a partnership approach to disaster resilience, with funding recipients helping to build a culture of shared responsibility with governments,” Mr Hartsuyker said
