It was a perfect opportunity for Roads and Maritime Services’ boating safety and education officers to focus on water safety.
Director of Maritime Angus Mitchell said around 64 Boating Safety Officers from around the state converged on the state’s waterways for Operation Boatsafe Know the Rules campaign.
“The focus was on safe behaviour on the water and recent changes to marine laws,” Mr Mitchell said.
“Around the state, more than 2000 vessel checks were carried out and while it was found a majority of boaters were generally compliant, some operators still have a way to go.
“People need to ensure they are wearing a life jacket when required and also complying with speed limits.
“More than 100 penalty notices and 100 official cautions were issued this weekend, with most of the penalties for not wearing a life jacket and exceeding the speed.
“There were also 62 random breath tests carried out with NSW Police and it’s pleasing there were no positive results detected.
“Some boaters on offshore waters needed a reminder about offshore equipment requirements.”
