Bellingen Shire Council has 89 timber bridges, all of which will be assessed over the next four months. The results of the assessments will assist Council in developing its future timber bridge replacement program.
During September the following bridges were assessed:
- Bielsdown River Bridge, Coramba Road
- Deep Creek Bridge, Coramba Road, Megan
- Die Happy Bridge, Darkwood Road, Thora
- Harness Cask Bridge, Harness Cask Road, Bostobrick
- Kalang River Bridge, Bowraville Road, Brierfield
- Sunny Corner Bridge, Sunny Corner Road, Bellingen
- Lavenders Bridge, Bridge Street, Bellingen
- Duffys Bridge, Kalang Road, Kalang
- Spicketts Creek Bridge, Bowraville Road, Brierfield
- Cutbank Creek Bridge, Coramba Road, Bostobrick
Some of these bridge inspections included the use of an under bridge inspection unit. This unit enables workers to safely access the full underside of a bridge without the need for scaffolding or boats while only taking up a single lane allowing two lane bridges to remain open during the inspection.
This unit is used on high level structures and has significantly improved both worker and public safety during the bridge inspections.
These works are being funded through the NSW Government Fixing Country Roads Grant program.
