As well as classroom discussions and activities students were introduced to four special guests and participated in amazing activities in Disability Awareness Week.
The Wheelchair Roadshow gave students the chance to experience wheelchair basketball and hear Brendan’s story of growing up with spina bifeda.
Lauren Hodge shared her story about life with a hearing impairment and having cochlear implants.
Past pupil, Blaise Borrer, entertained Stage 2 and 3 with his very personal insight into aspergers, and, Kent the guide dog brought his carer Sally to discuss living with a visual impairment.
A clear message from all these wonderful speakers was to believe “you can” not “you can’t, or you will never be able to”. Their so-called disabilities have not stopped them from pursuing their goals and dreams.
A ‘Dare to be Different’ mufti day challenged staff and students to get out of their comfort zone and also raised awareness of autism through classroom activities. Money raised from this mufti day has been donated to the Autism Advisory and Support Service.
Bellingen Public School would like to thank Guide Dogs Australia, Wheelchair Sports, Blaise Borrer and Lauren Hodge for their outstanding contributions to our inaugural Disability Awareness Week.
