The funding will ensure coordinated planning and weed control measures.
The Member for Oxley, Melinda Pavey, said weeds had major impacts on agricultural productivity and could be costly and difficult to control.
“Their growth and spread has been exacerbated locally after our wetter-than-normal early spring. A major effort is ongoing along the north coast against Tropical Soda Apple, and this funding will help manage the challenges we face in controlling weeds such as TSA,” Mrs Pavey said.
An additional $1.5 million has been allocated to target state-wide problem weeds. Other priority weed species include alligator weed, senegal tea plant, parthenium weed and water lettuce.
The NSW Weeds Action Program is a key initiative under the NSW Invasive Species Plan. The $10 million NSW Weeds Action Plan is the NSW Government's key mechanism to deliver outcomes from the NSW Invasive Species Plan. It replaces and modernises weed funding programs that have been in place since 1964.
Regional weed committees are developing comprehensive Regional Strategic Weed Management Plans to guide action on the ground. Programs are largely delivered by local government under a regional planning framework provided by Local Land Services.
