The 17+ years girls relay team consisted of the same team as last year’s 16 years team, those being Katie Thorn, Gaia Malcisi, Maia Berry, Talissa Alford, yet this time they were up against a bigger age group – girls of 17,18 and 19 years. In fact, the BHS team consisted of two 16-year-olds and two 17-year-olds. These girls ran faster than they had before posting a smart 52.63sec in their heat. This put them into the final where they placed seventh in the state. This team has one last attempt next year to get on the podium.
Another good result included, Brynne Couper finishing a fantastic eighth in the 14 years and under 1500m walk, however, the outstanding performer of the championships was undoubtedly Katie Thorn in the 16 years girls age group.
Katie qualified for an amazing nine finals finishing with four medals and two national qualifying standards. Katie’s best result was in the pentathlon, which is an open event so she was competing against girls up to three years older than her.
During the five events of 200m, 800m, long jump, high jump and shot put, Katie amassed enough points to put her into third position winning a bronze medal.
Katie’s other outstanding individual results in the 16 years age division included: Third triple jump, third long jump, third 4x400m NC relay, fifth 100m hurdles, fifth 200m, tenth 100m.
Katie is an amazing young athlete with a great future.
Congratulations to all the athletes who competed at State.
