The Sydney Wildlife Organisation has issued a warning for people to use caution, as well as tips on how to avoid becoming a victim of an attack.
“During the nesting season, normally four to six weeks, magpies will vigorously defend their territory and their chicks,” the organisation’s website says.
“They do so by swooping low and fast over passers-by who they see as a threat to their young.
“This can be alarming, but it is usually only a warning. Take an alternative route if possible.
“Otherwise, for protection, wear a helmet or a hat, or carry an open umbrella. Sunglasses placed on the back of the head are sometimes effective.”
As silly as it sounds, using ice cream containers or painting eyes onto the back of a helmet can deter a magpie attack.
Magpies can cause serious damage, especially to children.
If you are riding a bicycle when the magpie swoops, dismount and walk quickly.
