“The fires have been lit in random locations and times. They have resulted in one farmer losing several hundred acres of valuable winter feed and the RFS needing to do an extensive back burn to protect a property.
“On Thursday night (August 18) they were called to fires at Hernani where there were fires lit in 10 different locations over a one kilometre length. Once again a farmer was in danger of losing winter feed.
“Let's be quite clear. These fires are illegal. It is arson. If you see someone lighting a fire beside a road, take the rego number of the car, if you can take a picture, and call 000.”
The Dorrigo Plateau Rural Fire Brigade said the police need everyone’s help to catch and prosecute the perpetrators of these crimes.
“This is very serious,” the local Dorrigo RFS spokesperson said.
“The weather is fairly benign at present, we are still having frosty nights. If this activity is still occurring in September it will only be a matter of time before someone is injured in an accident from the smoke across the road or an out of control fire will burn down someone's home.
“This activity has to stop and the people responsible brought to justice.”
The local firies plea comes after a number of fires down south.
