The busy road does not dissect the village, the 24 hour trucking movements have ceased and the highway’s travellers do not have that easy access to the town’s centre. It’s a recipe for peacefulness – but some lament this may see trade diminish.
However, these concerns are in the minority, according to local Chamber of Commerce president, Steve Allan, and he instead spruiks a better future with more growth.
“A survey of chamber members and other businesses has shown that more than 70 per cent feel that the bypass will have a positive impact on Urunga,” Steve said.
“Without the heavy vehicles and other traffic bisecting the town, Urunga will be much easier to access and a more attractive place to live and visit.
“It should also be better for motorists, pedestrians, cyclists and even motorised scooters to move around.
“In addition, the chamber is hopeful that the subdivisions that have recently received approvals will now proceed given that the impost of interfacing with the Pacific Highway is no longer a consideration.”
