The winner was drawn from a competition as part of week-long activities at DMM centred on raising awareness for World Turtle Day.
The two turtles, named “River” and “Jango”, have been in care at DMM in the marine rescue hospital for the last few months after coming in with “float syndrome”, which prevents the animals from being able to dive or feed.
Mr Greg Pickering, Curator of Animal Care at DMM said, “Float syndrome is a pretty common issue with the turtles we rescue along the Coffs Coast. Fortunately with time and specialised care, the gas build up that causes the turtles to float breaks down and these animals are able to be released back into the ocean for a second chance at life.”
As part of the activities centred on World Turtle Day, DMM has been running tours through the marine rescue hospital throughout the week with all proceeds from these tours being contributed to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
The rescue and rehabilitation of these turtles is just part of the ongoing rescue and conservation work that DMM carries out, spending on average over $100, 000 annually on conservation matters across the Coffs Coast.
