The near extinction of the Bellinger River Snapping Turtle from a virus has seen scientists, conservationists and animal lovers locally, nationally and internationally embark on a near 12 month campaign to do their bit in aiding the species to survive.
From being the face of Western Sydney University's new double degree Bachelor of Science (Zoology)/ Bachelor of Natural Science (Animal Science) to the subject of ABC’s Lateline program to being discussed widely in online forums.
In another indication as to the power of this endearing creature’s plight, the latest social media campaign, a petition called Save the Bellinger River Snapping Turtle from Possible Extinction has garnered nearly 90,000 signatures.
The Care2petition explains how the Bellinger River Snapping Turtle is on the brink of extinction after a virus disease decimated the already small population at the start of this year. With a mortality rate of near 100 per cent, the site calls for “zoologists and scientists to investigate this situation and find a resolution that will save this turtle from the brink of extinction” and by “signing and sharing this petition (you will help) in our efforts to encourage a lengthy investigation and hopefully good resolution that will save this animal, possibly starting with a breeding program and healthy waters.”
