Despite the gusty breeze, the shire’s annual night of nights saw several thousand people picnic, sing, welcome Santa and watch the perennial favourite, fireworks.
Led by musical coordinator Mei Wei Lim, 40 performers sang, all of who donated their time and talent.
“The gifted musicians were sophisticated and dashing in their evening wear, and their performances were simply delightful,” Mei said.
“The combination of thousands of voices singing together uplifted everyone in the audience and moved many to tears … the carols music was from all around the world and it brought a lovely message of Christmas to the shire community.”
Highlights include a bubbly performance by children's entertainers The Giggles, a joyous ensemble rendition of Vivaldi's Gloria and Handel's Hallelujah Chorus, some very personal and touching solo performances. Visiting opera stars wowed the crowd with some magnificent singing, and the finale item of ‘Do You Hear What I Hear?’ brought the evening to a powerful close.
Key to the event’s success was the Urunga Chamber of Commerce. President Steve Allan said “a stiff Nor’easter could not deter a large crowd from coming to enjoy the 21st annual Carols Urunga. They were not disappointed either as the music arranged by Mei Wei Lim was a treat for all present. The kids were excited by the visit from Santa Claus, and of course the fireworks spectacular ensured the night was complete”.
Next year's Carols Urunga is on Saturday, December 17 and Mei said it was not too early to plan ahead.
“Do invite your family and friends from afar to join you in our beautiful part of the country, to celebrate Carols Urunga,” she said.
“The event is one to be proud of … as attendees emphatically proclaim, the quality of the music is on a par with the best in the country.
“Visitors are always telling us that the shire has something really special happening, with our art, music, dance and all other creative arts and happenings and we proudly agree.”
Carols Urunga could not take place without the help and generosity of local volunteers, community organisations, sponsors, and of course, the musicians. The organisers of Carols Urunga thank everyone involved and “we hope you all have a wonderful Christmas with your family and friends, and wish you peace and goodwill for the season and for the New Year”.
