A team of nine junior orienteers from the region, including two Urunga locals, brought home six trophies from the recent Armidale Area Schools Orienteering Championships. After travelling for three hours, the team produced the perfect combination of speed and navigation to triumph in every category they entered.

Around 650 students competed on the day. In the Year 3-4 category, Jamie Woolford had a winning margin of over 14 minutes for his ‘Line’ race, in a field of 28 athletes. He then teamed up with Rogan Hely to win the ‘Score’ event by more than 20 minutes, despite a huge field of over 250 competitors.
The boys cleaned up in the Year 5-6 category, in a sizeable field of 150 athletes. Sam Woolford won the race, closely followed by Elijah Thorn, then Oscar Woolford. Sam went on to win the ‘Score’ event, closely followed by the team of Elijah and Oscar.
The high school students also put in wonderful performances. Katie Thorn ran a strong race to win the Year 9 - 12 girls ‘Line’ race, while her older brother, Jacob Thorn, had a tight win in a competitive Year 9 – 12 boys ‘Line’ race. Katie teamed up with Sarah Ludwig to win the ‘Score’ event, while Jacob teamed up with Tim Martin to post the fastest overall time on the ‘Score’ event for the day.
