Don Walker’s songs have been mapping Australia, from Kings Cross to regional towns and the spaces between, for more than 30 years, through solo albums and shows, a couple of albums with Tex, Don and Charlie, back to his youth as a member and main songwriter of Cold Chisel. H
e composed ‘Saturday Night’, ‘Cheap Wine’, ‘Standing on the Outside’, ‘Four Walls’, ‘Khe Sahn’ along with many others, and co-wrote ‘Flame Trees’.
Collaborations followed; first Catfish, then Tex, Don and Charlie – along with solo albums: the ‘Freedom S/T’ 1981, ‘We’re All Gunna Die’ 1995, ‘Cutting Back’ 2006 and ‘Hully Gully’ 2013.
Don has also written songs for Jeff Lang, Mick Harvey, Troy Cassar-Daley, Jimmy Little, Jimmy Barnes, Ian Moss, Anne Kirkpatrick and many others. In 2000 he wrote the title song for Slim Dusty’s hundredth album ‘Looking Forward, Looking Back’. In 2009 his first book “Shots” was published to great acclaim.
In the years between he has toured with his superb band: Michael Vidale bass, Hamish Stuart drums, Garrett Costigan pedal steel, Roy Payne and Glen Hannah on guitars and The Don on keys and lead vocals.
Supported by songslinger Jimmy Dowling, The Don will perform in an up close and personal performance at the Bellingen Memorial Hall on Friday, September 4 at 7.30pm.
