Grammy-nominated guitar and vocal harmony duo The Milk Carton Kids (US) will headline a superb, diverse line-up that includes roots and blues legend Ash Grunwald with his star studded band, Melbourne melodist with the arresting voice Ainslie Wills, new gospel/hip hop outfit Jones Jr (DJ Morgs from Thundamentals + Ev Jones from Rumpunch), folk pop darlings Tinpan Orange, soul diva Emma Donovan with her Melbourne funk band The Putbacks, exotic rhythms from Bobby Singh’s internationally acclaimed trio Rasa Duende and red hot flamenco from Arte Kanela. They will join over 60 other international, national and local acts that will light up the pubs, halls and street corners of the beautiful, picturesque town of Bellingen on the NSW Mid North Coast.
Following a similar format to its much loved summer sister festival, The Mullum Music Festival, Bello Winter Music will take place throughout the many delightful (and cozy!) venues of Bellingen, including the Memorial Hall, Diggers Tavern, Federal Hotel, No 5 Church St, Little Red Kitchen, Bellingen Golf Club, the original Bellingen Anglican Church, St Margaret’s Church Hall, will spill out into the streets and cafes for a family-friendly, affordable weekend of music, celebration and community.
As well as the music, Bello Winter Music will be alive with street theatre, workshops, free events and walking tours. Mullum Music Festival’s hugely popular psychedelic Magic Bus will be making a trip down especially for the inaugural event to ferry festival-goers around the town (as well as transporting Mullumbimby and Byron Bay locals to Bello Winter Festival in a kind of reverse Aquarius Magical Mystery Tour down the coast!)
"Bellingen has a similar counter-culture to Mullumbimby; it's just back from the coastal tourist destinations and it’s a naturally beautiful area,” director of Bello Winter and Mullum Music Festival Glenn Wright said.
“Just like Mullumbimby, Bellingen has a diverse community, a long history of environmentalism and a vibrant local music scene. A third of the Bello line-up is made up of local musicians from Bellingen and the Coffs Coast area. Both festivals are dedicated to programming new and emerging artists - local, national and international - and I’m sure like Mullum, Bello will become ‘one to watch’ for exciting new acts.
“Creating a partner winter festival in Bellingen rather than expanding Mullum Music Festival means another community can reap the benefits of a small scale, community run festival. The Bellingen community is deeply involved in every aspect of the festival. It has been inspiring working with them to create a unique, authentic celebration of their town.”
Bello Winter Music (Thursday July 2–5) is the perfect excuse to get away for a weekend and shake off the winter blues. Early bird tickets are now available at bellowintermusic.com.
