New owners Peter and Chris Lubans said they were excited with the potential of this “beautiful old iconic building” and their “design changes will enhance the township streetscape while also preserving the integrity and appeal of the building”.
The Lubans believe architect Vil Brickman has made changes that will “allow the building to read as originally intended” and they’ve designed a “comfortable, visually pleasing and usable space by replacing the existing lean-to verandah with a minimal, modern roof”.
The Lubans previously owned, and developed the old butter factory in Coffs Harbour into the highly successful Coffs Promenade and they said it’s this experience that places the local building in good hands. The renovations are to start soon with the existing kitchen shop vacating the premises.
“Important alterations to the access and entry ways to the church will be required,” Peter said. “The internal spaces can be reconfigured to accommodate multiple uses and while the mix of tenants is yet to be finalised, we’ve talked to prospective tenants so their design needs can be incorporated into the works.”
In addition, Peter told the Courier-Sun “the existing front brick fence will be retained and the two memorial plaques which are of special significance to the community will remain on the fence columns.”
The completion of the major parts of the works is expected before Christmas.
