On Saturday, May 5, 2012 Club Urunga was declared open by the Chairman of the Board, Bruce Cronin.
While bowling clubs are closing throughout the State, it’s believed Club Urunga is the first new licensed club to be built and opened in the last six years.
After protracted negotiations with the insurance company following the March 2009 flood event, it was decided to rebuild the club on the top bowling green.
The final cost of the new building is expected to be around $7.65 million, which includes the building contract, design and professional fees, furniture fittings and equipment, Council fees, plus external contracts such as augmentation of electrical supply and Telstra upgrade, construction of a second bowling green and installation of audio visual and security equipment.
Mr Cronin is delighted with the finished product.
"This is a great place to enjoy quality leisure time with your family and friends," he said, “we are about good food in our dining room and great coffee and snacks from the coffee shop, you can eat inside or "alfresco" on our deck and outside areas, add to that there is live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights and facilities suitable for meetings, parties and functions.”
Club Urunga CEO, Thane Duncan says he will remember with pride the process of rebuilding the club.
“For me, the best part of the process has been seeing the efforts of staff to keep everything going and maintain a happy workplace under extremely difficult circumstances,” Mr Duncan said. “I feel very proud to have staff who have willingly taken on different roles, often multiple roles, to help reduce the burden of wages during the construction process.
“Members have been very patient and our staff have unfailingly done their utmost to offer the best service possible.”
Mr Cronin said: “It gives us great pleasure that on May 5, 2012 the Urunga Bowling Club Ltd is re-emerging to trade as Club Urunga, stepping into a new era rich with possibilities in our contemporary new clubhouse filled with professional staff and catering to the needs of our community and beyond”.
