If we as a global society were to make plans to phase out the use of fossil fuels in say five to ten years time, the oil companies’ share price would crash. (Their value on the stock market incorporates their estimated future earnings.)

Consequent to that, the banking system would crash, as will the global financial order. We either fry the planet, or we plunge ourselves into financial chaos.
This is one of many issues unidentified by the environmental movement.
The impact of corporate activity and corporate ownership of natural resources has long been the subject of scrutiny and criticism.
The critical role of the financial and banking system is, in contrast, poorly understood; and rather than focusing on criticisms of corporations, we should take a look at reforming the banking system from the ground up. Controlling the banking system is the key and people need to take on this challenge by creating their own peoples bank.
Gavin Tang (pictured) has given three talks in a series to Bellingen Shire residents on similar issues.
In this talk given on behalf of the Fractal Economy Cooperative, such issues – as well as their solutions - will be examined.
Gavin will also discuss the spiritual and psychic origins of the notion of infinite growth, which came out of the colonising of the New World by Europeans.
The Fractal Economy Cooperative is a start-up grassroots project, which recently began in Bellingen and is designed to empower individuals and communities against concentrated economic power.
Its nature as a ‘fractal’ means that it incorporates all the practices that are necessary to have a fair and sustainable economy. These practices are largely unprecedented for community projects and national governments.
They include a new form of governance (direct democracy), a new form of taxation called the transaction tax, and a totally different approach to banking. The Cooperative is adamant that these measures can be applied both as a grassroots project and also on the national level.
The talk will be held at 4.30pm on Saturday, February 9 in the Bellingen Youth Hub corner of Williams Street Bellingen. Contact: Kevin Turner 66550840. website: www.fractaleconomy.coop
