Back in March, the headline for our coverage of the Autumn Plant Fair suggested it might be "the last hurrah" for big community events for some time.
While there have been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in our region for 115 days, you only have to look to Victoria or New Zealand to see how quickly such records can be overthrown.
After much deliberation, the team that creates the biggest plant fair on the Mid North Coast has cancelled the one that was supposed to be held on September 14.
"The committee decided that the risks associated with an event which draws 3000 people to Bellingen Park are not able to be managed adequately and still retain the ambiance of the Plant Fair," they announced on their Facebook page.
Founding member Caroline Joseph said this is the 30th year of the biannual event.
"We put on two Fairs each year, one in the Autumn and of course the Spring Fair, which means our hard working and dedicated volunteers have actually put on 60 Plant Fairs," she said.
The team would still like to help local gardeners stay in touch with local growers, so they have been posting contact details for those who are able to welcome customers to their nurseries.
Check out @bellingenplantfair if you'd like to connect with suppliers like North Coast Natives, Dark Star Orchids and Willina Worms.
Let's hope the 100+ stalls and the throngs of plant lovers are able to reconvene in Bellingen Park for the Autumn 2010 Plant Fair.
