Last week she was announced as the GP Synergy North Coast Registrar of the Year, as award that recognises excellence and ongoing commitment to quality general practice education and training.
Dr Arulampalam made the decision to become a rural GP with an added desire to increase her skills in obstetrics and gynaecology during her GP training.
"I always knew I wanted to specialise in an area where I could 'do everything', as well as rural and remote medicine, so I realised that with GP I had found the right specialty," Dr Arulampalam said.
"My most recent training term in Dorrigo has cemented my passion for rural medicine ... I have loved getting up every day to a job where I can make a real difference in people's lives."
She said that working in a small community made her feel included and valued as a practitioner.
"I have also found it extremely professionally satisfying because as a rural practitioner I provide more complex care than what I would be doing in inner city Sydney"
She said she and her husband intend staying on the Mid North Coast region for at least a couple of years.
