Letter: Farewell Esma May

The Urunga boardwalk is now a safer place! My mother Esma May, late of Urunga, passed away peacefully in her sleep in Bellingen hospital on 1 September, the first day of spring, aged 91.

As Mum had often stated, she felt that her work was done the day the decision was made to rebuild the lido. Many of your readers would know of Mum, who wrote numerous letters decrying the loss of the what had been a very popular piece of community infrastructure.

Mum raised six sons. It was warming for us each to witness the care of the Urunga community for our mother, especially in these last eighteen months as her mental and physical capacities failed. The care she received at home and over her final days in Bellingen was exemplary and kind. What a special community in which to live.

Mum's faith sustained her, she was never hesitant to share it, or one of her poems. Many, I'm sure felt barricaded by mum, dressed in mauve and purple blocking their way on the boardwalk with her scooter.
