Morgan Neville's beautiful 90-minute documentary follows the inspiring quest of world-renowned cellist Yo Yo Ma to put together a collective of musicians from numerous cultures with the ambition of promoting cross-cultural understanding and, ideally, world peace through music.
This stimulating film blends performance footage, personal stories and archival film to paint a moving portrait of people who come together in locations across the world to celebrate the universal power of music to both preserve traditions and bring cultures together. It follows a diverse group of instrumentalists, vocalists, composers, arrangers, visual artists and storytellers in their quest to inspire hope.
The film intercuts concert footage with scenes dating to the group's earliest meetings and interviews in New York, Syria, Spain and rural China. In each of these places we see musicians in their homelands playing traditional instruments and telling their often moving stories about life in their homelands. When Kinan Azmeh (Syria), Kayhan Lalhorf (Iran), Yo Yo Ma (France/USA), Wu Man (China) and Cristina Pato (Spain), all stars in their fields, come together to play, the experience is dazzling.
The film screening will be at the Bellingen Memorial Hall on Saturday August 10 at 7pm.
Tickets $15 includes a drink and nibbles.
