The group has been weeding and tree planting, mostly along Frenchmans Creek, and the native bush is responding with great natural regeneration.
North Coast Local Land Services have supported this effort over the past four years with funding for professional bush regeneration services, and just recently Bellingen council also contributed through the environmental levy to control weeds along the cemetery boundary.
This site is unusual in that only a small variety of weeds are present, albeit in large numbers: camphor laurel and small-leaved privet are the main culprits to take a hold after the plantation was severely thinned in 1996.
Forestry Corp have now committed this part of the plantation to biodiversity conservation and support the group through the provision of native tree seedlings.
The volunteer group meets on the first Sunday of each month at 9am at the cemetery for a couple of hours of work in this bushland. All are welcome to join.
This is a great opportunity for people over the age of 55 on Centrelink benefits to fulfill their mutual obligation. Best to come along for a working bee and try it out.
