The Brewers got on the board first. Braiden Spalding led off the game with a single and came around to score, but with the bases loaded and two out, Scott Hansen spotted the Bluesox catcher with his back to the play and made a dash for home, but was thrown out.
Woolgoolga came out firing in reply in bottom of the first inning. Their lead off batter blasted a two-base hit, then their next batter scorched a laser up the right center field gap. But Callum Rayner got a great jump on the ball, snared the line drive, and fired a strike to second base to double off the startled Bluesox runner. Another hit followed, but Matt Bryant made a nice play at third base for the third out.
Bellingen extended their lead to 2-0 in the top of the second inning, with Charles Wolfson's ground out driving in Luke Nelson, but the Brewers left two more runners stranded. Woolgoolga started the bottom of the second with another long double, but pitcher Paul Holding retired the next three batters, striking out two, to keep the Bluesox off the scoreboard.
The Brewers extended their lead to 4-0 in the top of the third inning. Bryant and Rayner singled with one out and both were driven in by David Jeremy's two-out single.
Woolgoolga finally got on the board in the bottom of the third inning, scoring twice to narrow Bellingen's lead to 4-2. From there, however, the Brewers took control of the game.
Bellingen came up to bat and quickly loaded the bases. Bryant came to the plate with one out and blasted a grand slam, the first home run hit by the Brewers this season. Bellingen added a fifth run in the inning on another two-out single by Jeremy to lead 9-2.
The Bluesox came right back, with their first two batters stroking base hits. But Holding once again buckled down and kept Woolgoolga off the scoreboard, getting a force out at third base, then striking out the next two hitters.
Bellingen added four more runs in their final turn at bat to extend their lead to 13-2. The Bluesox could manage just one run in reply, despite getting two more doubles and a single in the inning, with Holding picking a Woolgoolga runner off third base to stymie any hope of a comeback.
In A grade, Bellingen welcomed back Hunter Bake-Smith, who is home from Newcastle for the mid-year break from university, where he is in his first year of study in aerospace engineering. The Brewers finally recorded their first win of the season, though it came by way of forfeit, as the Bluesox were decimated by a wave of absences and injuries and could not field a team.
Bellingen will be back in action next Saturday at Stadium Drive against the Sawtell Dodgers.
