The Bellingen Girl Guides gather annually to make floral wreaths for community groups to place on the War Memorial on ANZAC Day.
Relying on donations of local garden flowers, the wreaths are made on a woven base of locally gathered bracken fern.
Bracken fern is a local weed, and unlike the floral foam used for florist's wreaths, is 100 per cent biodegradable.
"Like many other plastics, floral foam breaks down into microplastics, which impact our local rivers and oceans. The Guides are working to raise awareness around reducing plastics in our environment," Guide District Manager Kristen Collier said.
"We've discovered using our old fashioned method not only gives back to our community, but also serves our environment. Every wreath is fully compostable."
As with every year, the Guides are calling for donations of firm-stemmed garden flowers. They are happy to come collect flowers from homes or flowers can be dropped off any time at the Guide Hall from 2pm on Tuesday or Wednesday (April 23 and April 24) at the Hall on Bowra Street, next to the old Bowling Club.
