As the theme for IWD was Balance for Better, Anna spoke about the gender balance at work; decision-making on boards, committees, in politics and in government and gender imbalance in wealth. Women are still generally underrepresented at certain levels in the workplace and earn a percentage of what men would earn for doing a similar job.
Members of the CWA shared stories about balance and wellbeing in their own lives, often surprising their friends with unknown tales. Photos were taken of the participants holding International Women's Day cards displaying ideas of ways we can support a better balance for women.
Anna also spoke about the role of the Community Wellbeing team at Council. This team is comprised of the Shire Librarian Jill Haynes, library staff from the three Shire libraries, Dean Besley and Carol Ruigrok representing the Bellingen Youth Hub and support staff of the Dorrigo Support Centre. This is a Council auspice service that provides social support to seniors on the plateau. The Community Wellbeing Manager, Alison Pattinson, also looks after emergency services around the shire, supports arts and cultural activities and the provision of lifeguard services.
Nine members and a visitor from Redlands attended the meeting. Rhondda read from a booklet that local members put together over 20 years ago, Thoughts from our Members.
First up was one of Frieda Keathon's poems, which was appropriate as her daughter Ruth Egan's story is being prepared by Alison Carter. Frieda is a direct descendant from Johannes Marx of Marx Hill fame.
Should anyone wish to see the booklet, please come down to the CWA Rooms on a Friday morning and see Annette or Rhondda as they have the only two copies.
