How to vote:
When you vote in person at a polling centre at a state election, you will be given two ballot papers: one for the Legislative Assembly (upper house) and one for the Legislative Council (lower house).
In the Legislative Council (upper house) a voter has two options:
To vote above the line, the voter must place a number 1 the box above the line next to the candidate of their choice.
If they wish, they may continue in other boxes above the line for other candidates starting with 2.
Alternatively voters may choose to vote below the line by voting for at least 15 candidates.
Voting in the Legislative Assembly (lower house) a voter must:
Place number 1 on the ballot paper next to the candidate of their choice.
They may continue with other numbers starting with 2 if they wish.
Penalties for not voting:
Failing to place your vote without a valid reason will result in a $55 fine.
