Created for children from pre-school to 17, it’s a free program that inspires imaginations and instils a love of libraries and reading, with over 1000 public libraries across the country participating.
The 2018 theme, Curious Creatures, encourages eager young readers to discover new worlds as they explore and connect with a curiosity of creatures through a range of interactive activities available in libraries and online.
The Curious Creatures theme will link to school holiday library activities around dinosaurs, sea creatures and night and day using a Museum in a Box packet of resources from the Australian Museum.
Over 43,000 children registered with the Summer Reading Club in 2017, reading over 360,000 books between them over summer, and organisers are hoping participants will crack half a million books in 2018.
Summer Reading Club members can also meet 21 new Australian authors and illustrators online, read their helpful creative hints and tips and preview exclusives of their up and coming work.
Online participants will also have the opportunity to blog with children’s authors, Dr Cameron Stelzer and Emma Middleton, search for answers to Encyclopaedia Britannica’s sponsored quiz, craft a What Happens Next story ending to Dave Lowe’s story starter, share their book raves and artwork, and lots more.
Known for his Pie Rats and Scallywags book series, all Dr Cameron’s adventures feature anthropomorphic characters on adventures of curiosity and discovery.
After completing a Doctorate of Visual Arts, Dr Cameron began working at the Natural History Museum in London.
“It was there that I began writing and illustrating stories inspired by the animals in the museum. I have been writing and illustrating stories about curious creatures ever since,” said Dr Cameron.
