Alchemy is the latest student art exhibition to emerge from the local TAFE Diploma of Visual Arts course and students are currently working fervently to launch the exhibition at the Sawtell Art Gallery on November 10.
Each year, graduating students of the two-year diploma course organise and run a group exhibition, highlighting works developed during the course, while also providing students with commercial and industry experience.
Opening night is kicks off at 6pm and then the exhibition will be open daily from 10am to 4pm, Sunday November 11 to Tuesday November 20.
From developing concepts and a cohesive body of work, through to planning, budgeting, designing, marketing, curating and running the exhibition, the student have it covered.
Although primarily associated with turning base metals into gold, Alchemy, at its heart, is simply about transformation. Making art of any form is a process of transformation, whether it be creating new works from raw materials, or re-purposing old materials.
“We’re making magic,” student Susan Raymond said.
Local artist and employee of the TAFE visual art department, Jo Elliott said this exhibition seeks to showcase the evolution of the students and the diverse array of artistic styles and mediums that have been the culmination of their two-year journey.
“It’s been a privilege to be a part of the journey and seeing the students’ ideas come to life,” Jo said.
There will be a diverse selection of artworks to engage with, accompanied by speeches, nibbles, drinks, and live music performed by local musician Peter Kaukiainen.
Everyone is invited and admission is free.
Sawtell Art Gallery is on the corner of Lyons Rd and Bayldon Rd, Sawtell, opposite the bowling club.
