She will now represent the region in the state final to be held in Sydney in October.
The Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition has been encouraging primary school students in public schools to explore multiculturalism in Australia for over 23 years, as well as giving students a place to develop and refine their public speaking skills and improve their confidence.
After being selected as school finalists at the Bellingen Public School ‘Speak-Off’, Evie Laverty, Laura McNeil, Luka Shirley and Imogen Laverty travelled to Nambucca Heads late last term to compete in the district final of this competition, with each student presenting both a prepared and an impromptu speech.
The adjudicator praised the students of Bellingen Public School for the depth of their thinking and original approaches to the topics they had chosen.
In a field of 34 speakers, Evie Laverty placed equal second in the junior division with a highly commended award and Laura McNeil was awarded first place. Imogen Laverty was also awarded first place in the senior division.
Laura and Imogen then competed in the Northern NSW regional final with speakers from as far away as Foster, Tweed Heads and Moree.
Laura’s win in the junior division places her in the final twenty students in the competition out of over 20,000 entrants.
