Legacy was formed over 95 years ago by ex-servicemen to assist the families and the children of service personnel who died on active service, or who have since died, or who have given their health in the service of our country.
Legacy is a non-profit organisation which provides advice and help in many forms – financial, rental and housing, welfare, education, legal, medical, dental and residential care for these widows and their families.
There are over 450 widows and families in the Dorrigo/Coffs Harbour area who receive assistance. There are 15 widows and three Junior Legatees in Dorrigo that the Dorrigo Chapter supports.
Our Legacy Patron, Cpl Mark Donaldson VC had this to say about Legacy in our area:
“If it was not for the hard work, determined efforts and stoic teamwork of all the volunteers and those involved there would be many people, families and widows suffering and doing it tougher than they need to.
“This is why it is imperative that you, as a community, show your support and get behind Legacy to let them know you have their backs. Just like they have the backs of those who need it. Because that very idea of looking after your mate and their family at home was born in war, yet it extends beyond that and well into the future. It is the Australian way and nature to do so.”
Legacy Week runs from Monday September 3 to Friday September 7 this year. Dorrigo Legatees will be selling Legacy Badges in the residential areas of town on Wednesday September 5. All badge sellers will carry Legacy identification. All donations of $2 or over are tax deductible and official Legacy receipts will be issued on request.
The main Legacy Badge Day effort will be on Friday September 7 with a street stall outside the Dorrigo Community Centre. Donations of produce or items to sell at the street stall will be gratefully accepted. If you can help, or supply anything, please ring Bob Denner on 6657 1145.
Dorrigo’s support of Legacy is never taken for granted.
