Since 2008 a group of volunteers have been working with teenagers from year 7 to 12 to teach them the skills of sewing.
Anniversary event Saturday, September 1
To mark the special anniversary they will hold ‘A Stitch in Time’ 10 year celebration event on Saturday, September 1, from 1pm to 4pm at at the Bellingen Uniting Church Hall.
Michelle Stockton from the group said as part of the celebrations, the group will display their handmade creations, and parade vintage clothes, wedding dresses and beautiful garments. There will also be a high tea provided for a gold coin donation.
Thanks to the generosity of the Bellingen Uniting Church, Rotary, CWA and the community, Stitched Up has been able to offer a place for students to explore their creativity in sewing for free.
“We have a huge amount of fabric, notions and accessories to make anything,” Michelle said.
With the help of generous volunteers, the group have made many amazing items.
“The students have made amazing quilts; incredible hand embroidered objects; up-cycled clothing; primary and high school uniforms; bags of all shapes and sizes; patchwork cushions; pencil cases; Ballet outfits – even tutus; Dr Who objects; adjusted op shops clothes for formals; greeting cards, jewellery; fabric baby toys and so much more.
“The list of achievements is only limited by our imagination,” Michelle said.
Sewing sessions
Stitched Up meets every Monday during the school term in the Bellingen Uniting Church Hall from 3.30pm to 5.30pm.
“We start with a yummy home baked afternoon tea to share with our stories of the day,” Michelle said.
“Once a semester we have a ‘high tea’ where the girls cook soup, quiches and slices to serve to their families at 5.30pm.
“It is a chance for the girls to thank the ladies who volunteer, and for the ladies to thank the girls for their enthusiastic inspiration.”
