With the annual Spring Plant Fair and the Growers Markets falling on the same Saturday, on opposite sides of the river, the two events have decided to combine forces.
The trial merger will be in Bellingen Market Park on Saturday September 8.
“The Market Park will be bursting at the seams this spring with an extra 20 stalls, Plant Fair coordinator Clayton Colmer said. “The reason for this is that the wonderful Bellingen Growers Market will be joining us for the first time with their magnificent locally grown fruits and vegetables.”
Sue Kelly, who represents the Bellingen Growers Market committee, is enthusiastic.
“We are very excited to be joining with the Plant Fair after many years of running separately, We are both on the same page with what the Plant Fair stands for, which is supporting local growers and encouraging sustainable agriculture in all forms.”
The Growers Market Precinct will occupy the area in front of the grandstand above the food area.
The rest of the Plant Fair remains exactly the same, with all the usual nurseries and sellers of tropical, native, vegetable seedlings, ferns, bamboo, you name it! And suppliers of pots, tools and other gardening support materials will also be there.
Enjoy the fine food, coffee tea and cakes near the Market Stage, which will host relaxing music, or walk around learning from the growers how to develop your wonderful garden.
The Plant Fair plastic free trials over the last year have proved a success and will continue.
“We’ve moved on from plastic bags. None of our growers will be using single use plastic bags again at this event,” Clayton said.
You’ll find growers have plenty of creative ideas for carrying plants including homemade bags. The BEC Stall will again sell reusable bags. The pot recycling is working well, we see hundreds of pots pulled out of people’s garden sheds and reused by the growers so bring in your used plastic pots unbroken and clean.
The 2018 Spring Plant Fair is held at the wonderful Market Park, in Church Street Bellingen and opens at 8am and finishes at 2pm. Please carpool if you can and disabled parking will be available near the gates. If you wish to know more about this colourful and fragrant event, or if you are a grower or volunteer and want to be part of it all, you can contact the Plant Fair Team at Bellingenplantfair@gmail.com.
