The long running Bellingen vs Dorrigo tennis challenge hit the courts again on Sunday. The biannual challenge between the two towns has been happening “for as long as anyone here can remember” said a number of long time club players, which on further pressing, has been at least 19 years.
The competition is hosted in turn, with Bellingen being responsible for the lunchtime barbecue and delicious desserts this year.
The standard of play was competitive, but always friendly, and when asked if the winning team was playing for a big flash trophy, the response was “we play for the glory, not a trophy!”
It was great to see a number of Dorrigo and Bellingen juniors playing along this year, showing both clubs’ commitment to supporting the development and inclusion its future players. As one senior player put it, “they learn their on-court technique and skills from their coaches, but it’s our job as elders to teach them the on-court etiquette”.
At the end of the day, Bellingen took out the win scoring 182 games to 74 over Dorrigo.
