With more people on the roads as school holidays come to an end, drivers need to pay attention to ensure they arrive safely at their destination.
It is very important that motorists don’t rush, don’t drive while tired and don’t drink alcohol or take any drugs before driving.
Police are also reminding motorists not to touch their mobile phone and always wear a seatbelt.
With more than one person killed on our roads every day this year, I urge drivers not to rush to get to your destination
- Superintendent Fred Trench
Oxley Police District Commander, Superintendent Fred Trench said all motorists have a responsibility to obey the road rules and to drive in a manner that doesn’t threaten lives.
“With more than one person killed on our roads every day this year, I urge drivers not to rush to get to your destination. It’s not worth risking your life and the lives of others just to make a deadline.
“Road safety is our number one priority. Drivers need to pay full attention to the road when travelling and take care behind the wheel to ensure you and your family get home safely.
“Please slow down and drive to the conditions. We do not want to see any more tragedies on our roads,” Supt Trench said.
Top tips for staying safe on NSW roads this weekend:
• Plan your route and rest stops along the way
• Drive to traffic conditions, stick to speed limits and state laws
• To avoid fatigue, make sure you get a good night’s sleep and avoid driving after midnight. Plan to share the driving if you can
• Be aware of signs of fatigue: yawning, excessive blinking, bloodshot eyes. Pull over for a break in a safe place and take a nap - 20 minutes works best
• Have a Plan B if you intend to drink alcohol - don’t get behind the wheel
• Always wear a seat belt. As a driver it is your responsibility to make sure every passenger in the car is buckled up
• Check your vehicle before driving - tyre tread and pressure, lights, breaks, engine oil, coolant and power steering fluid.
