Competition at the 10th Anniversary Coffs Coast Rugby Challenge was the pinnacle of the recent competitions with the Rangers 10s and 12s teams playing three days of rugby with 31 teams from across 10 clubs.
This annual school holiday challenge is hosted by NSW Rugby at CEX Stadium Coffs Harbour to encourage the game of rugby. And encourage it does, drawing teams from the local area and afar including the Hunter, Terrigal, Wahroonga, Sylvania, Lower Mid North Coast and Avoca Beach across age groups from 10s through to 15s.
Garry Walsh, Development Manager North West for Waratahs Rugby, placed his own challenge on each of the clubs, their coaches and managers reminding them to "let the kids play" and always look to promote "respect, pride, accountability and inclusion".
The reward for the club that met the challenge and promoted these rugby values was recognition with the Coffs Coast Challenge Spirit of Rugby Prize.
The Dorrigo Rangers Club managed to do this bringing home this sought after recognition and the accompanying prize of team jerseys valued at $1000.
It’s a wonderful achievement for a small club, that might have been outclassed in the numbers department but not where it counts.
The Rangers 8s also have what it takes to make a great junior rugby team joining their older counterparts at the Crusaders Gala Day at the start of the month playing in cold, wet conditions against St Augustines, Bishop Druitt College, the Barbarians, Grafton, Wauchope and Armidale.
The youngest of the Dorrigo teams also proved their speed against the opposition sending Ava Mila into the Crusaders Sprint to take out second place.
Three junior Dorrigo teams, both boys and girls, are playing weekly in the Coffs Crusaders Junior Competition taking the paddock each Friday night at Rugby Park, Toormina with a mixture of success as they head towards the tail end of the season. The 10s are leading this charge for Dorrigo sitting at second place in their division.
There are just two rounds left to the wrap up the regular season before the finals competition begins. The Rangers teams will play out the Crusaders competition and then set their sights on preparation for an Armidale Gala Day in September.
Congratulations to each of the Junior Rangers players and thank you to the Dorrigo Club, the coaches, families and community for supporting the kids through a busy 2018 season.
