Aikido is a modern, non-aggressive Japanese martial art combining self-defense, fitness and self-development.
“The word means the way of harmonious spirit and movement,” Chris said, “and the martial training is used to polish the mind and body.”
Chris has been studying, practising and teaching aikido for over 30 years, having first encountered it at university.
“I looked in on a class and saw people gracefully flying through the air and thought, I want to do that.
“Decades later, I’m still studying and enjoying every class.”
Aikido is suitable for both sexes and all ages, and people are encouraged to train at their own level of enjoyment and fitness.
The classes in Bellingen are for teens and adults. Chris’ dojo is affiliated with the Aikido of the Waterfall Way dojo at Thora and students are encouraged to train at both venues.
Classes in Bellingen start Thursday May 17 at the Youth Hub, from 6pm to 7.30pm at a cost of $5.
