“This first film in the series looks at both the positive impacts of having affordable and secure housing and the challenges faced by those without,” forum organiser Emma Belcher said. “It provides an opportunity to see the human face of what can often be a statistic driven conversation.”
It is hoped that this film will help to generate a broader discussions about what is possible around affordable housing in this region in the lead up to the Affordable Housing Local Solutions Forum on May 3rd and 4th at the Uniting Church Hall in Bellingen.
Producer Kell Stoner said it has been a privilege hearing people’s personal stories and getting to make a film about such an important national and local issue.
“And while there are some heartbreaking moments in the films, there is also a sense that as a community we can come together to do something about it,” Kell said. “Bellingen and Nambucca Shires are special places – not only are the beautiful natural environments, the community is special in the way it comes together to support each other and aren’t afraid of dealing with big and complex issues.”
Organisers describe Kell as having incredible story telling ability and a delicate touch that combines the humanness of the issue with the bigger overarching issues. They say that sharing these films with the community is a fantastic starting point for the conversations that need to be had at the upcoming forum.
The forum will take place at the Uniting Church Hall in Bellingen on Thursday May 3 and Friday May 4 and will host a number of guest speakers including NSW Chief Planner Gary White, CEO NSW Shelter Karen Walsh and Dr John Martin, Emeritus Professor La Trobe University, to name a few.
There will also be a fundraising dinner held at Cedar Bar and Kitchen on Thursday evening from 5.30pm where Dr Louise Crabtree and Dr Ben Spies Butcher will facilitate a future focused discussion about property and housing in a changing world.
