The Bellingen Valley Magpies took on the Orara Valley Axemen at Bellingen Park on Sunday in Ladies League Tag and Reserve Grade. In a move to improve spectator numbers, Secretary Peter Glyde moved the starting time back a couple of hours to 2pm. If you were watching your clocks that is just when the heavy rain moved in.

As coach of the Ladies League team Peter then became more popular with the girls when they had to run out in the heavy rain to begin their game. For the majority of the first half the Magpies had the better of play but could not score a try. Orara however, made a break to score a long-range try and lead 6-0 at half time.
Something happened at half time as the Magpies came out a different team. Marion Campbell scored early on (delighting the crowd with a celebratory dance) and Sarah Beaumont converted and the scores were locked up at 6-6. A little later Rachel Devine put a clever chip kick through for Tina McRae to score, 10-6. The Magpies suffocating defence then led to continued mistakes by the Orara team but they could not take advantage of this until the final minutes. Sharp passing by the Magpies put Tina over for two more tries completing another hat trick (two weeks in a row) in quick time. Sarah converting the last try for the Magpies to run out winners 20-6.
In Reserve Grade the Magpies had the run of play for the first twenty minutes but mistakes with the line begging let them down. Finally Brody Ray Williams scored a try as the passes stuck and the Magpies led 4-0. This however stirred the Axemen into action and they scored two late tries to go to the break at 10-4.
Once again the Magpies had the run of play in the second half with a couple of tries disallowed. Louis Taylor did cross for a determined try late in the half however the kick at goal failed and the Magpies were defeated 10=8. This team is getting better each week and a win is not far off. Next week the Magpies travel to South Grafton to take on the Rebels in three grades.
