Ladies League Tag victory

The Bellingen Valley-Dorrigo Magpies hosted the Coffs Harbour Comets at Bellingen Park on Sunday.  The only team to come away with a win was the Ladies League Tag team. The Under 18 and Reserve Grade lost in two hard fought encounters.

The Ladies League Tag Magpies were put on the back foot from the kick off with the Comets scoring a long-range try in the first minute.  However, things changed fairly quickly with Tina McRae taking an intercept on the half way line to race away for a try. Sarah Beaumont converted and the Magpies were in front 6-4.  They went further ahead when Tina raced onto a Marion Campbell pass to score under the posts. Sarah again converted right on the half time bell and the Magpies led 12-4.

Tina scored her hat trick of tries early in the second half and with another successful conversion the Magpies led 18-4.  This spurred the Comets into action and with continual Magpie mistakes they hit back with two tries to make the final minutes very exciting.  However, the Magpies prevailed to win 18-12.

The Under 18s was a tough encounter with neither side giving an inch for the whole game.  This meant a number of penalties and dropped ball were the order of the day. The Comets showed their class to lead 16-0 at half time but were only able to score one more try in the second half.  McKye Tucknott stirred the Magpies into action in the second half with some strong runs and clever off-loads. This led to tries to Jack Farrell and Mason Boardman for the Magpies to eventually go down 20-8.

It was encouraging to see a few more senior Magpies turn up to play Reserve Grade, however this meant that they were going to struggle in the hot conditions.  Max Melville scored for the Magpies mid way through the first half for the Magpies to trail 16-4 at oranges. It was all one-way traffic for the Comets in the second half as they ran in four converted tries to lead 36-4.  The Magpies once again scored late in the half, Josh Shearim converted and the Magpies lost 36-10.

Next week the Magpies take on the Orara Valley Axemen in League Tag and Reserve Grade at Bellingen Park on Sunday.
