While such news of more renewable energy to a substantial number of Bellingen businesses is welcome, this news has a special twist. It is the first occasion in our shire when the local community has joined with local business to achieve savings in both dollars and carbon dioxide.
Bellingen Shire Electricity Alliance, a small local group of volunteers, has facilitated the ‘marriage’ of local residents willing to invest, with local businesses at the Old Butter Factory who saw the benefits of a much cheaper source of power.
As a result, Bellingen Shire has taken its first steps to develop its potential as a community to own its electricity supply locally, while pulling its weight in environmental terms.
