The speakers, from local service suppliers and providers, were Terry Daniel representing Active8, Lachlan Hockings from Fibre Network Choices, Ben Cumming from C3 Group, Jason Errey from the Bellingen NBN forum, as well as Mike Marom GM North West Region, Telstra, Michael Sharpe, Regional Manager from Optus and Ian Scott, Community Manager from NBNco.
The overall advice from this panel of experts was to ask your retail provider if they can meet your needs. Do they support your EFTPOS machine, back to base alarm, fax, PABX etc. Not all suppliers support all technologies. This is also a chance to update a lot of your technology to take advantage of some of the amazing capabilities of the fibre network.
Ask friends about their experience and ask your provider what minimum speed you can expect.
Plan your migration. You will have to move to NBN eventually, so sign up sooner rather than later but choose your time so that you are not doing it during your busiest period.
It may be better to get a plan with no contract to give you flexibility as you may want to change your capacity at different times.
Ian Scott from NBN Co pointed out that NBN provides the infrastructure and service providers provide the retail link to the customer, with a choice of speeds and capacities. NBN connected 6000 premises last week.
The NBN service is delivered over a range of technologies including fibre to the premises (FTTP), fibre to the node (FTTN ) and satellite. There are over 160 providers, so be in charge of the process, don’t automatically signup with your existing provider, shop around to find the one that suits you.
