The theme for this year's Creative Mountain Arts Exhibition is Fabric of Life. There will be feature displays of quilting, weaving, spinning, needlework, felting, and textile art, including demonstrations of equipment and techniques.
"Seeing yarn, cloth, and garments being spun and woven by hand gives you a new appreciation of things we wear every day and often take for granted,” exhibition convenor, Liz Hutchison said.
Be sure to see the stunning display of over 20 quilts made in the Misty Mountain Getaway Quilt Workshops. Curated by Chris Timmins and Meg Owen, the back room of the Dorrigo Community Hall will be transformed with jewel-like colours. The quilts will include traditional patchwork, embroidery, and appliqué.
The popular Shoebox Sculpture Competition is open to anyone who would like to make a sculpture that will fit inside a normal-sized shoebox. The more unusual and imaginative the sculpture, the better! Choose your favourite for the People's Choice Prize.
Celebrate opening night with local artists and artisans at 7pm on Wednesday, March 28. The judge will announce the winners of various sections. Plus, choristers from the Dorrigo Public School Concert Choir (led by Sheila Guymer), and the Dorrigo Choir (led by Ellie Fruitrich) will perform. Don't forget to buy a ticket for the Raffle! There are gorgeous prizes to be won.
Throughout the CMAE, Gallery 2453 will host the Youth Art Exhibition, Cut from a Different Cloth, featuring several of our talented young people. Plateau sculptors Sandra Pitkin and Jenny Parkin coordinated a weekend of youth art workshops, sponsored by Bellingen Shire Council.
Waterfall Way Gallery and Components Café will host complementary exhibitions by textile artists from the broader region. And to inspire your own creativity, there will be hand-painted linen and cotton textiles available for sale from Misty Threads.
On Easter Saturday, enjoy the festival atmosphere of the Made In Dorrigo street market, also held in Hickory Street. It features fresh food, arts, and crafts, with all produce made on the Dorrigo Plateau.
The exhibition will be open daily from Thursday, March 29 to Sunday, April 8. The event is a major fundraiser for the Arts Council of Dorrigo. The ACD acknowledges the generous financial and practical support of all their volunteers and sponsors, particularly Bellingen Shire Council, in helping to stage the event.
