Dorrigo faced the Nana Glen Goannas at Reg Ryan Oval, Bray Street with both teams arriving early to find a dew-laden pitch. Nana Glen captain Kyrie Forster won the toss and elected to bat, sending the Dorrigo team to the field.
Taylor Gilbert and Callan Menzies opened bowled for Dorrigo – Taylor bowling a maiden over and Callan bowling Nana Glen opener Ryan Bonham for 7. The early wicket didn’t faze the Goannas, with both Isaac Hyde and Beau Guthrie retiring after facing 30 balls apiece with 22 and 23 respectively. The runs kept coming for the Nana Glen team with Dorrigo fielder Jamison Dawes doing his best for a run out with strong throws and direct hits.
The Nana Glen team batted as if they weren’t going to be broken but at 78 Dorrigo wicket keeper Lincoln Kellett stumped batsmen C Forster off a Jamison Dawes delivery giving the Dorrigo team the break they needed. And they broke them again very next ball with Kyrie Forster out hit wicket and Jamison Dawes on a hat trick. The hat trick didn’t come but more wickets did at 80 and then again to be 6 / 81. The Dorrigo team worked hard in the field chasing big hits as the retired batsmen returned and added to the scorecard – Nana Glen finishing their 25 overs at 9 / 108.
The Dorrigo team had all the work to do needing more than 4 an over to reach the Nana Glen total. And so the work started with each pairing of batsmen hitting and running to put pressure back on the Nana Glen field. Nana Glen were now playing with a dry ball and taking wickets to have Dorrigo at 2 / 22 then shortly after at 5 / 69. To Dorrigo’s advantage, though, the field was now dry meaning the good hits could start to get away and 7 fours were added to the score card. Ryan Miller came in at 5 for Dorrigo and showed his experience as the oldest in the team batting a wonderful innings of 27 off just 19 balls moving the Dorrigo scorecard ever closer to the 109 that was needed. To the delight of the Dorrigo spectators the runs came with Ryan Miller and Jed Capps at the crease when the winning run was taken to bring Dorrigo’s final card to 7 / 109 off 21 overs.
Congratulations to each of the Dorrigo junior cricketers for your individual input to a wonderful team season. Thank you to Nana Glen for your sportsmanship in an exciting game – both teams playing an enjoyable game in the right spirit.
