At its Ordinary Meeting held on Wednesday Bellingen Shire Council resolved to award $15,450 in funding under the Environmental Levy Fund to four local groups.

The Environmental Levy Community Fund is a small grants program supporting community based environmental projects within the Bellingen Local Government Area. Its focus is on projects which maintain or protect existing environmental achievements or assets, develop programs or projects which build community capacity, contribute to behaviour change or foster innovative and creative solutions which meet an identified environmental sustainability need.
Bellingen Shire Mayor, Cr Dominic King congratulated the community groups involved in delivery of a diverse range of projects across the shire.
“It is heartening to see the amount of community resources and energy adding value to the environmental levy. Community ownership of projects and their outcomes contribute to long term benefits for our environment and community assets.”
The Projects awarded funding are:
Rocky Creek Reserve – Weed Control Funds Control and eradicate invasive weeds, privet, honeysuckle, blackberry, and pussy willow in public reserve on the banks of Rocky Creek adjacent to Waterfall Way, 3 kilometres east of Dorrigo.
Bellingen Riverwatch – Our Rivers, Our Future This is an innovative citizen science program, which enables scientists and community to work together to monitor and care for the health of the Bellinger and Kalang Rivers. These monies will enable the purchase of Personal Protective Equipment for volunteers and supplement the inclusion of a Youth Leading The World Congress into the 2018 program.
Dangarra Landcare Community Nursery Project This project aims to establish and operate a community nursery and training facility at the old Greening Australia Nursery on the Dorrigo Showgrounds. The nursery will be managed by Dandarrga Landcare members and community volunteers in order to propagate and sell rainforest trees, shrubs, groundcovers and native grasses.
Sustainable Garden for Dorrigo Preschool This project will create a sustainable native garden on preschool grounds. The use of natives will attract bees, birds and wildlife and provide food and shelter for them. Incorporating an edible garden, pathways and little nooks for children to sit, observe and explore.
