The 13 years boys team had a big campaign with seven preliminary games to play to qualify for the semis. They started strongly however lost their first three games by only a goal each time – how frustrating! They then came up against some even stronger opposition and, despite never giving up, found the going too hard. They will benefit greatly from their experience.
The 14 years boys had their talented keeper, Wade McBaron, injure himself the day before leaving for Queensland. This meant the team was down to seven players and one of the court players had to keep,so things would be hard – very hard. They held their heads high and never stopped trying through their six preliminary games and were exhausted by the end.
The 14 years girls team lost a key player, Ashley Sticker before the carnival due to family commitments. This meant they were down to eight players and they knew they would miss the very talented Ashley.
The girl’s best result was against Mt Alvernia College from Brisbane winning convincingly 6-1. This game was the only game that really everything clicked. Some of the other games were disappointing, as it seemed they were the better team although the score said otherwise. With one game to play on the last day the Bello girls only had to win or draw to make the semis. The team they had to play had not won a game! Unfortunately, key player, Sophie Boyd was struck down with food poisoning and could not take the court at all. The rest of the team were fine but found it too difficult to pick up their spirits to play at their best and unfortunately lost.
All the players learnt a lot and had a great time. They will all benefit from the experience and will be looking forward to next year.
