The Bellingen Neighbourhood Centre had the idea of creating a space to allow people to access free books whenever they wanted to and the old red phone booth outside the museum was identified as the perfect storage for these books.
The Bellingen Museum kindly donated it to the cause and the Bellingen Men’s Shed then erected shelving inside the booth and Bellingen Library donated books to the project.
Bellingen Shire Librarian Surinder Kaur said it was not intended to be a book exchange or to replace library services.
“It is aimed at ensuring that everybody has the opportunity to read a book regardless of their circumstances.”
The Bellingen Neighbourhood Centre said it was a perfect accompaniment to the popular ‘Cupboard of Plenty’.
“We hope our community will enjoy this service and treat the phone booth will respect. It will not be locked and access is open any time of the day you feel like a book to read and enjoy.”
